Cloisonne is the term used to describe a method of decorating metal with enamel. Metal filaments (wire or thin strips of metal known as the cloisons)are fused to the surface of an object to outline a design which is then filled with enamel paste. The name cloisonne comes from the French word meaning "to partition." Although it probably originated in the Middle East, the French, Japanese and Chinese have perfected this artform. Cloisonne is closely related to the art of champleve - essentially the same technique, but instead of using filaments, the enamel is placed in hollowed-out depressions in the metal which prevent the colours from blending together. The cloisonne beads that you see in our cloisonne jewelry are usually from China unless otherwise stated.

Yes, its orange mother of pearl! A stunning cloisonne butterfly with peach and coral tones and a touch of blue is at the center of the mother of pearl. A special vermeil dragonfly charm is one of our favorites; it dangles from the 14 karat goldfilled large linked chain that makes up the third strand of the bracelet. The shape and design and colours of this cloisonne bead remind me of the Alhambra, a beautiful palace and fort complex built by the Moors in the hills of Andalucia in Granada, Spain. This piece of cloisonne jewelry is made of 14 karat goldfilled elements including the bangles and the toggle clasp. Fluted and square gold beads accent the cloisonne; my favorite touch is the Swarovski crystals - these are the Pacific opal colour and are a wonderful match for the aqua blue in the cloisonne.
