After being implanted with a piece of mantle tissue from another oyster, the mussels are put back into the river where they may be tended for 2 - 6 years. The pearls are rarely round, but are of solid nacre. Freshwater pearls are a beautiful resource for creating affordable pearl jewelry that is lustrous and freshwater pearls are also more durable than saltwater pearls. These are not shaped like a coin, so I guess coin pearls would be the wrong name for them since they are square-but Baroquely square so that in some places it looks like the pearls are dripping. These freshwater pearls are wonderfully unusual and very beautiful. Once again, a photo is difficult--these have no yellow.
